There has been a persistent problem with Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) in the CREOS area. It is pleasing to report that this is now well on the way to eradication.
Many members and supporters of CREOS celebrated the 50th anniversary of its foundation with a party in the meadow near the playing fields on Sunday 25th June. Everyone enjoyed their picnics accompanied by a variety of live music, dog competitions and other entertainment on a hot summer’s day.
Workdays have been well-attended by a handful of local volunteers, TCV and Good Gym. Unlike last year, when we made not one but two new hoggin paths, we have built no new paths at all this year. We have however improved our existing paths: we used logs to better define the edges of the Woodland Walk where the original wooden edges had rotted and disappeared.
Our next workday is on Sunday May 21st from 11am to 1pm. Meet in the Hanley car park.
The hornbeam is one of the most versatile British trees. Freestanding mature specimens, with their characteristic conical crowns, have considerable amenity value, whilst the wood, the hardest of any tree in Europe, provides valuable timber for furniture.
This year's CREOS AGM will be held on Monday 15th May. CREOS members will find details in the latest newsletter, and all members are invited.
